Fishing Report Ocean City, MD 5/31/2010

Fished aboard the Rain E Daze this past Sunday. We caught 3 sharks including a mako which we released, a brown shark which we released, and a 525 Thesher Shark which we most certainly did not release. A photo is on the site now and also appears on the cover of the Coastal Fisherman. Fish hit a 30W Shimano adjacent to the boat that was baited with a mackerel. Fish was landed after 1 hour.

Slow morning. Afternoon bite we had to ourselves just below 78A at western channel edge. Between 3:00PM and 4:30PM we caught 14 fish 4 throw backs and 10 keepers including 1 31 inch fish. Headed in at 5PM with our limit. All fish were taken in 62 feet of water mostly on umbrellas 12 bars back

Fished in gale force winds near 78A trolled North to just below the radar towers. By 11AM the other boats headed back in as conditions worsened. We fished until 3PM without a bite fought rough conditions and a sloppy ride back to the marina. Word of advice when you hear the wind whistling through your canvas and see it pushing water through your zippers go home.

Fished with members of Northern VA chapter of the CCA. Fished between 78A and 78. Most bait we've seen all season. Limited out by 10:30AM. Had 2 fish over 40 inches including a 46 inch fish. See pictures on our photos page.

Fished between 83 and 84. Limited out with 6 fish by 1PM. Caught most of our fish on the eastern channel edge near the 84 buoy. Biggest fish was 45 inches.

Another bad weather day. Trolled back and forth across the channel near the 83 buoy. Limited out with 6 fish by 11:30AM. Most were caught on the western edge of the channel in 40 to 45 feet. Biggest fish was 40 inches.

Opening day on the Chesapeake Bay. Trolled our standard 18 rods with a mix of 9 inch chartreuse and white tandem parachutes on our boards and umbrellas on our boat rods. Fished the western channel edge near the radar towers had our 6 fish limit by noon. Our biggest fish was 39 inches.

Nothing to report at the moment other than some good tautog action. We will be in Ocean City in about 60 days and have plenty of ocean city fishing trips still available this summer.

Tuna Fishing Report Ocean City, MD

The tuna fishing remains a hit or miss adventure with the most consistent tuna bite remaining the bluefin catches that continue to produce what are seemingly larger and larger fish as the season progresses. These
catches continue to occur in the area ranging from the tip of the 20 fathom finger thumb up to Massey’s Canyon and out to the Chicken Bone Hambone lumps. A reminder to all anglers that most of the boats fishing in these areas continue to troll horse ballyhoo on 1/3 to ½ spooled 80 wide reels. This technique is known to the charter boat community as way way back or WWB trolling. This means that no vessel should attempt to pass another in these fishing grounds any closer than 300 yards astern. Another effective technique employed by the boats in this area has been the use of deep running ballyhoo rigs sent subsurface with the use of planers or downriggers. Aboard the Reel Addiction we use both but find the downrigger while more precise in its depth to be a nuisance when the time to clear comes about. For those more interested in the yellow fin bite I wish we had a suggestion. The yellow fin continue to disappoint in 2009. Most of the yellow fin action has been just outside the Elephant Trunk in 30 to 40 fathoms. Unfortunately, the action is usually over by 10AM and never predicated on large amounts of bait being in the same areas day after day. We can only hope that as the sea surface temperatures begin to cool in September that more definitive temperature breaks and baitfish will be present to support a fall yellow fin season. Currently water temperatures from the 20 fathom line outward are hovering in the upper 70s to low 80s which has produced some good marlin fishing from 35 to 70 fathoms. The marlin fishing continues to be above average ranging anywhere from the tip of the Baltimore canyon to the tip of the Norfolk canyon. As always we wish all of our readers the best of luck.
